Uniting Against Child Abuse:
A National Conversation

Thursday, May 6, 2021
1:00 PM ET/12:00 PM CT/11:00 AM MT/10:00 AM PT

Join us for a virtual event organized by twelve Child Advocacy Centers working together to prevent child abuse.

Child Advocacy Centers are on the front lines in the response to child abuse.

For decades, their response has impacted millions of child abuse victims and their families – from small towns, rural communities and urban cities. This national collaborative model recognizes that we all have a stake in protecting children.

Twelve Child Advocacy Centers across the country are using their collective voices to UNITE! and raise funds to support the critical work of protecting children.

Please join us for a national conversation to educate, inspire and engage our local communities nationwide in this effort.

This event hopes to connect local communities on a national stage to bring light to the tireless efforts and the tremendous impact of Child Advocacy Centers and their community partners across the country.
Proceeds from this event will go to support the work of the twelve Child Advocacy Centers organizing this event.

Together, we can end child abuse.

FAQ

Have a question you don't see here? Please contact [email protected]

To understand what a Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) is, you must understand what children face without one. Without a CAC, the child may end up having to tell the worst experience of his or her life over and over again, to doctors, cops, lawyers, therapists, investigators, judges, and others. They may have to talk about that traumatic experience in a police station where they think they might be in trouble, or may be asked the wrong questions by a well-meaning teacher or other adult that could hurt the case against the abuser.

When police or child protective services believe a child may be experiencing abuse, the child is brought to the CAC—a safe, child-focused environment—by a caregiver or other “safe” adult. At the CAC, the child tells their experience once to a trained interviewer who knows the right questions to ask in a way that does not retraumatize the child. Then, a team that includes medical professionals, law enforcement, mental health, prosecution, child protective services, victim advocacy, and other professionals make decisions together about how to help the child based on the interview. CACs offer therapy and medical exams, plus courtroom preparation, victim advocacy, case management, and other services. This is called the multidisciplinary team (MDT) response and is a core part of the work of CACs.

The event will stream live from this webpage starting at 1:00 PM ET on Thursday, May 6!

Terry Crews

There are motivational speakers, and then there are “motivational do-ers.” Terry Crews is the latter. This bonafide powerhouse—actor, activist, best-selling author, former athlete, and beyond—has inspired countless individuals to “do something about it.” “It” can mean many different things to many different people: a difficult career choice, a seemingly unattainable goal, an addiction, an abusive relationship, or just life in general. Crews speaks from his experience—something he encourages everyone to do—but in the process, he is able to relate to universal stories of struggle.

Having endured abuse in childhood, Crews managed to turn his nascent passion for art into a prestigious scholarship at a young age, a path that would lead to an athletic scholarship at Western Michigan University and, eventually, Crews’ storied career in the NFL. Not content to slow down after retiring, Crews set his sights on Hollywood and launched the career for which he is most famous today. However, Crews will be the first to tell you that it was no easy ride. Between financial difficulties, confronting the challenges of a toxic masculine culture that included treatment for pornography addiction and an initial hesitance to talk about his experience with sexual assault in order to heal, Crews could have given up many times over. But he refused.

Crews believes that “whatever is meant to destroy you can be your salvation.” With a combination of radical honesty, effortless charisma, and infectious enthusiasm, Crews inspires audiences to overcome fear and shame, be honest, do the work, and live life to its highest potential.

Action-movie hero, sitcom star, game show host, pitchman, former NFL player and best-selling author all describe the man that is Terry Crews. Crews is perhaps best known for his action and comedy roles in an impressive resume of film and television work which include The Expendables film franchise, Golden Globe award-winning and SAG Award-nominated comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Everybody Hates Chris, and the wildly popular Old Spice commercials. He is also known for his ability to pull off what is considered the “best robot” on earth. In 2019, Terry premiered as the host of NBC’s America’s Got Talent: The Champions.

The New York Post has proclaimed: “One family, five pianos and 50 fingers add up to the biggest classical music sensation in years…When these kids do Rachmaninoff, they’ll make you forget about Marshall amps.”

The quintet has garnered extensive coverage from media outlets ranging from The Tonight Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, and The View, to CNN, Fox and Friends, Public Radio’s Performance Today, as well as The New York Times, Parade, People, the Los Angeles Times, the Sunday London Telegraph and Entertainment Weekly.
